Going Vegetarian?
As much as I would like to say I am going to try and be a vegetarian, its just not me. But if you are or thinking about it, wannaveg.com posted some great Veg BBQ Tips. I also wanted to mention Steve Pavlina who is not only a great blogger, but discusses why he is a vegan.
Summer is here and I hope your busting out a BBQ this weekend, I know I am! One veggie item I had that was amazing last weekend was some fresh figs grilled with honey and whip cream. This summer we picked up a new grill and have been using it every weekend and sometimes even during the week. I love to cook and encourage you too! Please let me know some of your favorite grilling recipes as well as any suggestions for people who are becoming vegetarians.

Super Shallot Corn on the Cob
Ingredients:
4 corns-on-the-cob;
Earth Balance butter spread (vegan) or olive oil;
1 or 2 shallots;
2 foot long sprigs of rosemary;
Directions:
In tin foil, wrap 1 corn, chopped rosemary, 1 tablespoon of earth balance or olive oil, and sliced shallots. Repeat 3 more times. Put on grill, grill, and enjoy a super duper corn on the cob. I deserve no credit for this recipe. It was handed down to me from my buddy at work, Daren.
Another tip for starting vegetarians: try not-dogs (as we like to call them). Yves, Tofu Pups, and Smart Dogs are 3 brands which I like. I think many people will agree that there is really nothing especially “meat-flavored” about hot dogs. It’s all in the spices and the texture and the fact that we’ve grown up with them. One caveat of these things is that they really don’t grill well. I do them in a pan on the stove with olive oil, as they will stick to anything that’s not greased.
Finally, I have one more which is “Veganaise.” Veganaise is a vegan mayonnaise substitute. I’m sure you will like it better. I’m so sure, in fact, that if you try it and don’t like it as much as or better than real mayo, I will paypal you a dollar (this challenge is not for the general public, just for the web site owner). You have my e-mail, so just send a payment request if I was wrong about the veganaise.
I’m glad to hear that you’re trying to eat more on the vegetarian side, even if you’re not going vegetarian. And, if you are looking for more vegetarian recipes, please write to me. I have thousands of ‘em. I love cooking like you, and being a vegetarian, I try to cook in such a way that it shows the eaters that vegetarian dishes are delicious and robust, just like the meat dishes to which they’ve grown accustomed. I think that half of the problem is that the word itself, ‘vegetarian,’ has negative connotations for some people because it brings to mind bland salads, in-your-face-liberal hippies, and holier-than-thou animal rights activists. So when I cook something, I don’t advertise it as vegetarian or vegan unless people specifically ask.
